Cannabidiol and Its different Administrative Modes.
Presentation of Sébastien Béguerie on Cannafest Prague 2014. The lecture is in the original version. Brief synopsis can be found in the description below.
Cannabis sativa is composed of more than 400 chemical compounds. From this large range of compounds two main classes can be distinguished, the terpenoids and the cannabinoids. Among these molecules the cannabinoids have attracted over the years more and more attention for their medical properties. Therefore many ailments have been treated with cannabis and its cannabinoids. So far, most of the properties observed have been attributed to tetrahydrocannabinol-delta-9 (THC) which has strong side effect due its psycho-activity and high interaction with the endocannabinoids system. However, in the last decade, some focus has been put on an antagonist compound of THC, called Cannabidiol (CBD). CBD is the second cannabinoid natively present in industrial hemp with no psychoactivity, but with high medical potential. Indeed in 2007, two researchers, one from California, Prof. McAllister, and one from France, Prof. Perez, have found that CBD is an inhibitor of Id-1 gene expression in aggressive cancer. What they found was that Cannabidiol could essentially ”turn off” Id-1 gene and stop cancer cells from spreading. They also found that there is no toxicity in animal model and it could relieve anxiety and nausea. Since that time more and more scientific publications have proved many of CBD’s medical properties. It was found to be antiepileptic, antiproliferative, neuroprotective, antispasmodic, antipsychotic etc. Today, GW Pharmaceuticals, which is the only pharmaceutical firm to produce cannabinoid based medicine, is studying enriched CBD product for epilepsy. They have found that CBD can reduce seizure from 10 a day to 1 a week. Therefore, clinical trials are ongoing with a 90% CBD product called Epidiolex.
Because CBD can be produced legally with industrial hemp with no THC, a new opportunity starts to rise in the hemp industry. CBD could benefit many and should be provided on a large scale to people to keep them in good health. Different forms of CBD administration have come on the US market in last two years. It is now possible to find CBD in capsule form with standard dosage. CBD capsule is taken orally and best to monitor the exact amount of CBD consumed to achieve the desired effect on a long term basis. CBD administered in oil drops provides a good way for topical use on joints and muscles. It can also be taken mixed with food as food supplement. CBD chewing gum can be found on the market as well, the chewing gum provides a quick uptake of CBD by the mucus and saliva for short term effect. It is recommended to handle momentum daily stress. At last, CBD is being added to E-liquid and can be inhaled in electronic cigarettes. It creates the possibility to have CBD anytime in an instant moment by taking a hit; it has an immediate effect on the body system, perfect for short term effect. It helps patients to adjust CBD uptake in addition with capsules, when there is a peak of anxiety or pain.
To summarize, Cannabidiol can be found in many forms and can benefit greatly to patients. The use and the form will depend on the needs of each person’s condition, whether they will need a long lasting effect or a quick snap shot effect, which depend on the symptoms perception.
