Cannabinoids – CBGA

Cannabigerolic acid is a very special cannabinoid acid of utmost importance, although there has not been a lot of research done on it so far. What makes it so special among other cannabinoids and their acidic forms?

Father of (not only) THC and CBD

CBGA could be called cannabinoid “stem cell”, because it is the ultimate precursor to not only CBG (cannabigerol), but through specific enzymatic processes (called synthases) also to THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid), CBDA (cannabidiolic acid) and CBCA (cannabichromenic acid). These acids begin to convert into neutral cannabinoids THC, CBD and CBC immediately after harvest, and this conversion is sped up when the plant is exposed to heat and/or sunlight.

Poor Research

Although some animal and laboratory studies have indicated that CBGA has its own medical properties (analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and even anti-proliferative), past and current research has been focusing almost exclusively on CBGA’s role in the biosynthesis of above mentioned cannabinoids. Some scientists believe that the identification of the processes behind conversion of CBGA into for example THCA is key to better understanding how THCA and THC work.
