From medical point of view, there are two basic types of stress, each with distinguishable effects on psyche and body: acute and chronic.

Acute stress is caused by unpredictable events or situations which make us response quickly. There is a release of stress hormones that may help us in dealing with i.e. fire accident or giving a lecture in front of an audience.
On the other hand, chronic stress means our brain releases the stress hormones on regular basis and this negatively affects our mental and physical state. In fact, chronic stress may contribute to a whole range of serious diseases, such as heart disease, type II diabetes, high blood pressure etc.
