From Cannabis to Endocannabinoids: Medical Uses of Cannabis from Ancient to Present Times

The lecture covers the history of medical uses of cannabis with the emphasis on its beneficiary healing effects, history of discoveries of various cannabinoids, human cannabinoid receptors and human endocannabinoid system. The discovery of the endocannabinoid system in humans allowed for much more research, because it helped us understand the working mechanisms and define in what ways cannabis affects human health. The emphasis will be put on the healing effects of psychoactive D9-tetrahydrocannabinol, but also on cannabidiol, which works as significant agent in healing processes as well. We will also provide information about current development in medical cannabis field in Israel and about the effects of cannabinoid treatment on certain diseases. The graphs will show what quality standards are applied in Israeli medical cannabis program, how important the homogeneity of grown plants is and how important the individual discoveries had on further scientific research.
